What is Therapy?

Therapy is a form of helping relationship where you and a therapist work together to understand your struggles, find ways to help you move forward and make positive changes in your life. It’s a safe space that is free from judgement and expectations where you can speak confidentially about anything that’s troubling you.

How Can Therapy Help?

Everybody has a story to tell. Therapy is a unique space where you can tell your story to someone who is listening deeply and will help you make sense of things. Through examining your emotional world, you can gain a clearer understanding of what is going on for you, so that you can be free to make choices which serve you best and let go of what doesn’t. This fosters a positive self-image and leads to change that benefits wellbeing and overall mental health.

My Approach to Therapy

As an Integrative therapist, I integrate, or combine, ideas and philosophies from three main therapeutic frameworks: Humanistic, Psychodynamic, and Cognitive Behavioural.

At the heart of this is a belief in the power of relationships and how they shape who we are.

A lot of our struggles come down to things like early childhood experiences, which shape how we think about ourselves and interact with others. Sometimes it’s about not feeling listened to, or not being able to ask for what we need. These experiences can leave us feeling small, helpless, or anxious.

It can feel like change is not possible, but it is. Therapy is a place to explore all this and gently unmask ourselves, which can be scary but ultimately frees us from unhelpful patterns and dynamics that are holding us back. In therapy we can get to the core of what the issue is and work on changing it.

Below is a breakdown of the three main frameworks and their core philosophy:

I also integrate concepts from Mindfulness, Interpersonal Neurobiology, Polyvagal Theory, and Somatic Body Therapy to support my practice and make sense of the mind-body connection and how our nervous system impacts our mental health.

My work is relational and underlying my approach is a belief that each person is unique. I take into account your preferences and work collaboratively with you to identify what will help most. Therapy is personalised, bespoke, and tailored to your unique needs.

Engaging in a therapeutic relationship means being an active participant in your own story.

You are the agent of change, and I am here to hold, support, and contain the difficult parts of your process. Together, we explore what it is that is holding you back, and with new insight and understanding, you can rebuild yourself as the person you truly are.

Humanistic

Person-Centred, Existential

All humans are unique and have the potential for growth. A therapeutic relationship that is based on respect, empathy, and non-judgement facilitates psychological change.

Psychodynamic

Attachment theory, Object Relations

Our past experiences are at the core of many struggles. Understanding these allows us to make sense of them, bring the unconscious to light and move on.

Cognitive Behavioural

CBT, Compassion Focused Therapy

Explores the link between our thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, aiming to find practical solutions and tools to support wellbeing.
